I’m not going to sugar coat it. Teaching is hard. It is something that we all started out with the upmost certainty that we could change the classroom, and change the experiences of the students within it. And in the first few years, yep! We most certainly did those things.
But your career, it deserves to be sustainable, fulfilling and help you to deeply connect to yourself, outside of the classroom. And it also is a place where you can constantly strive to know more, learn more, and truly, help those students in front of you.
I started out like you, in the classroom. In fact, as an English and History teacher. And I had some really, really challenging classes in my teaching career. But I didn’t have the grounding, the knowledge, and the means to access that knowledge, to truly understand my students, and then in turn, truly change that classroom.
And I tried.

I have made it my mission over the last 20 years to know as much as I possibly can about every student in my classroom. To find out more about specific learning difficulties, find out about learning challenges, how to interact with and truly teach my students, how to connect with their interests and realign assessments so that my students could achieve, and feel that achievement. I wanted my student to feel all of their success, no matter if that success didn’t fit the “successful outcomes” that were on that page.
As a learning difficulties expert, Irlen Screener, parent advocate, children’s author, yoga teacher, lover of music, and a mumma to two beautiful daughters, I am constantly reminded that the passion that I have for helping students from all walks of life, is truly the most important.
And with that. I know I can change your classroom. And extend your knowledge of your students, truly change what you bring to the classroom, and truly extend the success that ALL of the students in your room feel.
